There are several options you can specify - for example, if your water source is a well and or if your municipal water supply has an unusually high iron content - but for the most part, you don't need any of those. My personal preference is that the controller/valve ("brain") is the Fleck 5600 SXT, mostly because I like the features and interface for programming (you program these things once and never touch the programming again, except for perhaps resetting the time-of-day after a power outage).
